PERFORMANCE TESTING OF ROAD MARKINGS

Since the replacement of British Standard formulation based road markings with European Performance Standards in 1998/1999, testing of in situ road markings has become increasingly important for contractors. As specifiers develop a greater understanding of the suite of performance standards, including BS EN 1436 and BS EN 1871, they are placing a greater onus on contractors to demonstrate delivery of markings that comply with their specification requirements.

Kestrel Thermoplastics is committed to delivering a comprehensive service that includes the provision of in-situ and laboratory testing services to meet the needs of BS EN 1871:2000 (Road Marking Materials – Physical Properties) and BS EN 1436:2000 (Road Marking Materials – Road Marking Performance for Road Users).

Performance Testing of In-situ Road Markings:

 Retroreflectivity:

The measurement of Nigh-time visibility of road markings, in Dry or Wet conditions, tested in accordance with BS EN 1436:1998 Annex B this is perhaps the most important parameter required by clients.

 Luminance and Chromaticity Co-ordinates:

Measuring Daytime Visibility of road markings tested in accordance with BS EN 1436:1998 Annex C using a Minolta Chromaticity Meter.

 Skid Resistance:

Measured using a Stanley Portable Pendulum Skid Tester in accordance with BS EN 1436:1998 Annex D.

 Erosion Index:

Whilst this is not included in the European Performance Standard it is required in the UK and Ireland. Testing is conducted in accordance with Stanspec 2006 Appendix W.

Laboratory Testing Facilities:

 -Luminance Factor and Colour Co-ordinates

 -Softening Point

 -Heat Stability Testing

 -Viscosity Testing

 -UV Weathering
